How on earth did it win a Pulizer Prize?

It rarely happens to me, but I had to give up on this book. It took 1 week to read 66 pages... I simply couldn't do it.
I couldn't appreciate Annie Proulx's prose, with sentences like the following:
"Then, at a meeting, Petal Bear. Thin, moist, hot. Winked at him. (...) Grey eyes close tog ... (continue)

It rarely happens to me, but I had to give up on this book. It took 1 week to read 66 pages... I simply couldn't do it.
I couldn't appreciate Annie Proulx's prose, with sentences like the following:
"Then, at a meeting, Petal Bear. Thin, moist, hot. Winked at him. (...) Grey eyes close together, curly hair the color of oak."
Perhaps it is because I'm not a native English speaker, but this style really irritated me, together with the name of the characters, and the plot that after 66 pages seems not to start yet...

I find this book very very hard to review, as I found it so relaxing, so "real", so familiar that it would be like talking about a family member, someone you maybe don't meet too often but you can always feel comfortable with, somebody you can always count upon.

Amazing writing style. Reading this book was pure pleasure.<br />Great characters and charming settings.<br />4 stars, instead of 5, because the ending is a bit lacking in closure.

Adored this book.

From the believable and beautifully flawed characters to the unique quality of the writing, i was drawn into this book. I should have read it long ago, but I'm glad I finally sat down to do it on a snow day. I wish I had been in a book club, as this book left the reader with a lot to ponder and disc ... (continue)
