I really enjoyed this book, I started to watch the film once but couldn't get into it. The book is so much more.

The characters are wonderfully written and you feel as though you really do know them.
The story revolves around a woman and her daughter who are always on the move, looking for people who need their help. The story focuses on one place she stops at, and the people within the village and how they accept her and reject her.
A very interesting thought provoking read.

Vianne and her daughter Anouk live traveling and they arrive to Lansquenet-sous-Tannes, a small village in the french countryside. They're different from people living there: they don't go to church, they don't have prejudices against Roux and the river people, they don't care about what people think of them. But the Black Man doesn't like this wind of change...
    Fascinating.

With a host of wonderfully original and sometimes strange characters, Joanne Harris makes everyday life interesting in this deliciously different novel. Irresistible from the outset, 'Chocolat' is not only beautifully but cleverly written, giving voice to both main characters and therefore insight into two very different psyches. Thematically timeless, it is a study of small town life; of power and prejudice; of tradition and change; and family and friendship.

Having already seen the movie that was taken from this book I still remembered some of the most important parts of the story. Far away from being a teaching book it is a nice reading for a couple of days. The story at some points sounds like a fairy tale, where mother don't understand the powerful minds of children and where magic has still an important role. In any case the book is nicely written and really enjoyable.
The descriptions of the chocolate creations are in any case mouthwatering and outstanding.

  • There are so many stereotypes in this book that I wouldn't know where to start from. A book where the characters have been neatly split into heavenly creatures and bastards. The only saving grace is the front cover, inviting, but ultimately misleading.
