The heartwarming and unforgettable
story of a family in the making and the
wondrously neurotic dog who taught
them what really matters in life

John and Jenny were just beginning their life together. They were young and in love, with a perfect little house and not a care in the world. Then they brought home Marley, a wiggly yellow furball of a puppy. Life would never be the same.

Marley quickly grew into a barreling, ninety-seven-pound streamroller of a Labrador retriever, a dog like no other. He crashed through screen doors, gouged through drywall, flung drool on guests, stole women's undergarments, and ate nearly everything he could get his mouth around, including couches and fine jewelry. Obedience school did no good—Marley was expelled. Neither did the tranquilizers the veterinarian prescribed for him with the admonishment, "Don't hesitate to use these."

And yet Marley's heart was pure. Just as he joyfully refused any limits on his behavior, his love and loyalty were boundless, too. Marley shared the couple's joy at their first pregnancy, and their heartbreak over the miscarriage. He was there when babies finally arrived and when the screams of a seventeen-year-old stabbing victim pierced the night. Marley shut down a public beach and managed to land a role in a feature-length movie, always winning hearts as he made a mess of things. Through it all, he remained steadfast, a model of devotion, even when his family was at its wit's end. Unconditional love, they would learn, comes in many forms.

Is it possible for humans to discover the key to happiness through a bigger-than-life, bad-boy dog? Just ask the Grogans.

This is such a heartwarming, fun story which unexpectedly leaves you in tears at some parts. While the narrative is simple, this book is a great read for both adults and teens alike. Esp. if you love dogs! ;)

  • My best friend...

I absolutely loved this book! If you're an animal lover at all you'll be able to empathise with this dog-owner's story throughout the whole book. I absolutely loved this book! If you're an animal lover at all you'll be able to empathise with this dog-owner's story throughout the whole book. I have my own dog, a springer spaniel, and she is just as lively as Marley especially when we first got her the amount of muddy laundry we had to rewash belonging to our neighbours and sheepishly hand back was not even funny!

This book is a great little story of how a dog can give you what most humans never can. Unwavering loyalty and love. Doesn't matter if you roar and scream at a dog for eating your favourite pair of shoes, she'll still come up wagging her tail and licking your face two minutes later. Doesn't matter if you have no job and no money a dog will sit with you through it all with a never-ending supply of kisses to cheer you up. Your dog won't get angry with you, won't hold a grudge, won't talk about you behind your back and will never get sick of you. I believe and obviously so does John Grogan that a dog is definitely the best friend a man (or woman!) can have!

    A very well-written book!
The author manages to draw you into the story so that after about 100 pages you will feel like you have known Marley for a long time.
The events narrated in the book are usually hilarious, even more to a dog owner such as myself; but the author gives also space to some serious events such as the birth of his children and the difficult moments he and his wife encountered.
Getting familiar with Marley and feeling like you know him for a long time does come with a price: the end of the story will bring many tears to your eyes.

    A must-have for all animal lovers. :)

  • One of the most beautiful books I have ever read. I cried my heart out through the last few chapters, because having a dog I can totally relate to the story and Grogan's feelings for his dog.
