First "real life" Auster - great anyhow
I just finished the first Auster I have read which takes place in the real world. No meta physical events at all! Even so it still is great!

Real Auster
This is the best novel I've read from Auster, although I must admit I began with his latest book and I found them interesting but not completely developed, they promised more in the beginning that what you finally found.
