I enjoy historical novels and this one was an extremely quick read for all 600 something pages.
In The Eight the number of famous historical figures who show up does border on the absurd, but I was too busy having a good time as the story takes you across a chessboard that spans the globe. I picked this up because it was supposed to appeal to those who enjoyed the Da Vinci Code, and in my case, that was right on - I loved it. I stumbled on this book via a chess website and it turned out to be pretty decent. Following two parallel story lines, one in the 1970's and one in the 1790's, The Eight tells the story of a legendary chess service that contains a secret that people are willing to kill for.
