  In The Eight the number of famous historical figures who show up does border on the absurd, but I was too busy having a good time as the story takes you across a chessboard that spans the globe. I only wish I knew more about the game of chess.

  Quite An "Eight Ball"

  The author was having fun to include all the figures from the past to modern.

  Though the story has its creative plots, it still leaves traces and felt the plots were forcefully glued together.

If you are a chess fan, then you might particularly enjoy it, though I'm not and still loved the book. Big chase around the planet, with lots of riddles/puzzles to figure out. If you did *not* like the Da Vinci Code, I would definitely avoid this one.

  I stumbled on this book via a chess website and it turned out to be pretty decent. Following two parallel story lines, one in the 1970's and one in the 1790's, The Eight tells the story of a legendary chess service that contains a secret that people are willing to kill for.

  While similar in nature to The Davinci Code, The Eight suffers in that it covers an imaginary artifact made prominent in a time period that many people don't know (or care) much about. The result is that unless the reader has some chess background, the hook of the story is less relevant.

  The prose is awkward in some places and some of the asides are overly long. I much preferred the 1970's storyline to the older one, but overall the book was fairly compelling.

  It was hard work to finish this book. Vaguely interesting but I could not keep concentrated. Way too many irrelevant details.

  This book was ok. When I was told about it, they said "If you like The DaVinci Code, you'll like this one" so I was expecting this great read, however, it wasn't quite as suspenceful The DaVinci Code. Neville jumped between th 1790s and the 1970s which at first was a little bit confusing, but then I thought it made the book a lot more interesting. I can't say that I would overwhelmingly recommend this to others, but if people like a little suspence and history then yes. Also if they were interested in chess.
