Beginning with a short story appearing in The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction in 1978, the publication of Stephen King's epic work of fantasy-what he considers to be a single long novel and his magnum opus-has spanned a quarter of a century.

Set in a world of extraordinary circumstances, filled with stunning visual imagery and unforgettable characters, The Dark Tower series is King's most visionary feat of storytelling, a magical mix of science fiction, fantasy, and horror that may well be his crowning achievement. In November 2003, the fifth installment, Wolves of the Calla, will be published under the imprint of Donald M. Grant, with distribution and major promotion provided by Scribner. Song of Susannah, Book VI, and The Dark Tower, Book VII, will follow under the same arrangement in 2004. With these last three volumes finally on the horizon, readers-countless King readers who have yet to delve into The Dark Tower and a multitude of new and old fantasy fans-can now look forward to reading the series straight through to its stunning conclusion. Viking's elegant reissue of the first four books ensures that for the first time The Dark Tower will be widely available in hardcover editions for this eager readership.

I waited many years before picking up the dark tower saga. And I am happy I did it, because honestly, had I read this book 20 years ago, I would have probably not bought the second...

I know, some of my friends are telling me to hold on, and carry on reading. And King himself admitted in the introduction to the new edition that the first book was far from perfect.

But I was still surprised at how FAR, really really far, from perfect this book is. Especially compared to all the other books by King I have read. Honestly, not a good start. Maybe the saga will get better in the next books. But I am holding on only in light of the other stuff King wrote. Not because I was impressed by this first book...

    What a disappointment!

Here I was all eager to embark myself on this so very, very appraised Stephen King just to find myself unbelievably disappointed! The story has no sense and there's absolutely nothing to love with the whole bunch of characters.

This has been revised by the author - sadly. I remember reading it many years ago but I lost the book. The old version was more incoherant and random but it added nicely. 4 dots for the old one, 3 for the new.

  • Kef, Ka and Ka-tet

I didn't think it would be so nice to read the Gunslinger after have read the italian version more than 10 times... But I must admit that I discovered a new dimension, a sort of new story or a new point of view. Better than the italian version? I don't know, it was different, in a strange way... It ... (continue)

But I must admit that I discovered a new dimension, a sort of new story or a new point of view. Better than the italian version? I don't know, it was different, in a strange way... It was like reading the books with real voice of the gunslinger...
After 15 years since the first time I touched with my eyes the first sentence of the book which changed my life, I still think about this book like a magical novel... Even after the last chapter... I still think The Gunslinger is the best book of the saga, because in itself it contains all the answers to all the questions. It must be Ka.

  • The first in a series of seven. My general experience is that multi-part epics don't usually pick up till part three so even though this wasn't that amazing, it was interesting enough to make me want to read at least that far.
