Espiazione è un romanzo totale. Non ho alcun timore a definirlo in tal modo, credo sia l'unico possibile, e forse non riuscirò ancora a rendergli adeguatamente giustizia. E' un romanzo totale, per la bellezza del suo stile e della sua narrazione, colma di luce e simmetria, per la profondissima introspezione dei personaggi, per la cura nell'ambientazione, per la resa dei rapporti e dei contrasti tra gli stessi personaggi, per quelle zone d'ombra nelle quali spesso e volentieri scivolano le coscienze, e, infine, è un romanzo totale per la sua mastodontica eccedenza di senso. E' un romanzo dai molteplici livelli di lettura, che si lascia dietro una scia di non-detto anche quando credi di aver letto ormai tutto.
E' la storia di un'espiazione, di tante espiazioni. Briony accusa ingiustamente Robbie dello stupro della cugina Lola: Robbie dovrà espiare la sua (non) colpa, così come Briony a lungo cercherà di cancellare il suo primo incancellabile reato. Questa è la trama, fondamentalmente, ma l'espiazione coinvolge tutti i personaggi a più livelli: a Briony la colpa di aver falsificato sistematicamente la realtà col potere della sua fantasia, fino alla fine, ma anche, come si scoprirà, di essersi lasciata divorare da una cotta infantile (vera causa prima della tragedia); a Robbie e Cecilia la colpa di essersi amati, di aver accettato l'amore malgrado tutto, malgrado le distanze e malgado la vergogna. Espiazione è, infine, il romanzo-espiazione di se stesso: della scrittura, del potere creativo della scrittura, come sarà chiaro ad una Briony ultrasettantenne nell'atto finale e definitivo del suo reato più grande - quello di ergersi a Dio, colui che può perdonare tutti meno che se stesso.
Due paroline sull'edizione inglese che ho letto: affatto difficile da leggere, anche nei passi più densi di tecnicismi, come le scene di guerra, apprezzabilissimo nella scelta esatta delle parole, degli avverbi, delle metafore (tanto per fare un esempio, ricorrono più e più volte delle metafore "fruttate").
McEwan ha una prosa meravigliosa, talmente viva da bucare lo schermo - o, per meglio dire, la pagina. E' proprio per questo che l'autore può permettersi tranquillamente giochi metanarritivi, simmetrie, e altre diavolerie decisamente artificiose: per quanto possa essere deliziosamente costruita la cornice del romanzo, con quella sorprendente compressione di spazio e tempo (spazi chiusi: la casa dei Tallis, il fronte, l'ospedale; tempi rallentati: la prima parte, la più lunga, 24 ore di scena in quasi duecento pagine), per quanto possano essere disposti perfettamente ad hoc i personaggi sulla scena, la sua creazione apparirà sempre piena di vita. E, in un certo senso, è proprio in questo che consiste il grande dono e la grande maledizione della scrittura: dare vita all'inanimato.

When the final few pages were turned, the twist revealed and the implications sunk in - my God, I was devastated. Very emotionally powerful, and it will haunt you for a long time to come.

The 4 point rating scale really doesn't allow enough scope for the fine discrimination needed when comparing my favourite books. Out of ten this gets a nine for being excellently crafted, engaging and being one of those stories which stays in my mind long after I'd finished reading it.

It took me a while to finish the book and it was not exactly what I call a page turner, but I did know that McEwan's style would be challenging, I was prepared. It is a good story, I particularly liked the final chapter and its meta-reference and I look forward to watching the film. Still, the plot was unnecessarily riddled with long, boring digressions and descriptions, especially in part two, which I did not enjoy.
