I enjoyed all the anti-god propoganda, but felt that for the last book it was incredibly slow to get going.   I thought it was hilarious that the universe got saved by two 12 year old kids having sex! I enjoyed all the anti-god propoganda, but felt that for the last book it was incredibly slow to get going. I missed Lyra for the first 200 pages during which she was asleep and figured that could have gone much quicker. I was a little dissapointed that the rebellion went no where (as wars on heaven always tend to do in books).

  I felt this book lacked something in comparison to the previous two. Pulman's anti-Christian sentiment comes out more strongly in this book, and I found his vision for saving the universe ultimately downbeat and uninspiring.

  As far as fantasy series go, I found this trilogy to be more thought provoking than most while not having nearly as well-planned of a fantasy universe. Religion is a central topic to the series and the book sask some very interesting questions about Biblical myths. In asking whatever has happened to angel sentiments since the initial revolt, Pullman treads on some good uncovered ground. Some of the oomph is lost in the background of how this universe ticks, many of those explanations seem rushed and contrived.

  As for the previous two chapters, I had to fight with evil morning shifts and hours on buses to read this book, as it's been gripping me since the first page. Total awesomeness, full stop.

  Haha... the author is such a atheist! He killed the God and his Regent... hm... Jesus does not even deserve a mention in this story. The author is trying to explain all the devine stuff using science... and tell us that we have true enlightenment 300 years ago... when we get rid of the grab of religion and start the modern science. The dust, or dark material, or shadow are matter of consciousness.

  Many of the current physics models are used here: dark matter, multiple universe, parallel universe, etc. The interpretation of God is interesting. He is just the first devine / angel born... and since he enjoy a very long life and very pompous... he think he create the whole universe and all stuff in it... and "God" will subject to death as well... everything arises will pass away.. this is the universal law of nature, and nobody can escape it...

  However... I don't understand why the author treat Lyra like this. I like the first book. Lyra is not perfect but she is definitely brave, intelligent and independent in book 1. But once there is Will there... she suddenly lose all her mind and cool... when something nastry happens, she can only cry and cry, no idea what to do, just ask Will this and Will that....

  I was hoping this book is one without the boring romantic love... but am very disappointed to find out Lyra and Will are supposed to be Eve and Adam.... gee... I was worried that there will be some hot sex scene so that the couple can "fulfill" their fate!... Come on, this is a children's book.

  So... the story trun from interesting and brilliant in book 1... to just mediocre as a whole.

  And... Eve is a LIAR (Lyra) while Adam is a MURDERER.... haha!
