A new edition of Kenneth Grahame's classic story, with outstanding illustrations by Patrick Benson and a new introduction by William Horwood, author of The Willows in Winter.

Since its original publication in 1908, Kenneth Grahame's The Wind in the Willows has become one of the true classics of English literature loved by children and adults alike.

For the generations who have grown up with the adventures of Mole, Water Rat, Badger, and Toad, Grahame's idyllic world is as fresh now as when they first discovered his enchanting tales-of Ratty sculling his boat on the River; Badger grumpily entertaining his friends in his comfortable underground home; and the exasperating Toad being driven into one tangle after another by his obsession with motor cars.

The continuing appeal of the riverbank characters have been demonstrated by the recent success of The Willows in Winter, the acclaimed sequel to The Wind in the Willows written by William Horwood and illustrated by Patrick Benson. Now Mr. Benson has turned to Grahame's original work and created a delightful new edition, in which his magical illustrations give fresh life to Grahame's unforgettable story. The Wind in the Willows is the perfect companion to The Willows in Winter.

I LOVED these stories as a kid. I still love them now. The illustrations in this book are also great. I just love the whimsical fantasy of it all. Back then talking animals weren't so creepy as in our computer animated movies nowadays.

  • Such a sweet book. Full of the UK countryside, populated with unforgettable characters, the shy Mole, the considerate Water Rat, the boosting Toad, and the wise Badge. It reveals a deep understanding of nature and animal emotions.

Me has luvd the description of "the sense of smell" when Mole finds his own home all of a sudden in the midst of a snow-storm. Very useful, my dear pet-friends, when you want to explain hoomins what the sense of smell is for us animals....

The cuteness and childlikeness of the characters and the placid riverside setting put this story quite out of time, but also make it difficult to connect with them at any deeper level like we might do with more mischievous or inventive animal characters in other books (Fantastic Mr. Fox, The rats of Nimh). It's definitely one of those books that will feel special in a particular moment of your life, especially as a kid, and seem a bit boring or redundant otherwise.

  • A delightful story. It will make you dream, laugh, feel sad and angry.
I really loved the Mole, and I'll always remember when he finds his old house again, under the snow.
My mother read it aloud to my brother and me, when we were children.

My mother read it aloud to my brother and me, when we were children.
All parents who want to give their children - and themselves - a great gift, should do the same. Later I read it again, on my own, but that first reading was much better.

  • Not a book I wanted to read but C.S. Lewis mentions it so many times in his Letters I thought I must read it. Well, I was absolutely delighted with it. A great book. Lewis was right!
