  • Reread many many years after my first (and second and third etc...) reading and The Hobbit is still a wonderful read. It reads almost as if it was spoken, not written. Not as dense or detailed as the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but sets in motion the events of that trilogy.

    This is one of several books that I have begun many times yet have not completed.

    When I was a teenager, Tolkien's books became very popular. I am not a huge sci-fi/fantasy guy, but had heard how wonderful this was. Mr. Raspa, my 7th grade language/reading teacher, was the first person to mention this book to me. I recall his description of the wizard clearly.

    Some day I will read this and enjoy it. I used to own a paperback version, but picked this hardback up in one of the many book clubs I have been in over the years.

Smaug certainlylooked fast asleep, when Bilbo peeped once more from the entrance. He was just about to step out on to the floor when he caught a sudden thin and piercing ray of red from under the drooping lid of Smaug's left eye.
