Book Description
Smaug certainlylooked fast asleep, when Bilbo peeped once more from the entrance. He was just about to step out on to the floor when he caught a sudden thin and piercing ray of red from under the drooping lid of Smaug's left eye.
He was only pretending to sleep! He was watching the tunnel entrance......
Whisked away from his comfortable hobbit-hole by Gandalf the wizard and a band of dwarves, Bilbo Baggins finds himself caught up in a plot to raid the treasure hoard of Smaug the Magnificent a large and very dangerous dragon...

Reread many many years after my first (and second and third etc...) reading and The Hobbit is still a wonderful read. It reads almost as if it was spoken, not written. Not as dense or detailed as the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but sets in motion the events of that trilogy.
This is the class prequel to the LOTR trilogy. I never made it through the trilogy because I just thought The Hobbit was so much better! I read this for the first time in 5th grade. I just wanted to mention as a side note that The Hobbit is my favorite book, so the "reading progress" for this book is not correct--I have read this book more times than I can even remember. I always wish I could read it like I was reading it for the first time again though.
The Hobbit seems a much lighter forefather to the Lord of Rings, though it not without danger. There are the giant spiders of Mirkwood, the goblins of the mountain and, of course, Smaug. The Hobbit seems a much lighter forefather to the Lord of Rings, though it not without danger. There are the giant spiders of Mirkwood, the goblins of the mountain and, of course, Smaug. But it is full of light-hearted moments too. It does seem to be more for children, but in this book Bilbo takes possession of a seemingly harmless ring. Sixty years later, it will be a much more serious thing.
I first read this with my dad when I was four or five and this book has been a favorite comfort read ever since.
Read this years ago. One of my all time favorites.
