I just wanted to mention as a side note that The Hobbit is my favorite book, so the "reading progress" for this book is not correct--I have read this book more times than I can even remember. I always wish I could read it like I was reading it for the first time again though.
The Hobbit seems a much lighter forefather to the Lord of Rings, though it not without danger. There are the giant spiders of Mirkwood, the goblins of the mountain and, of course, Smaug. But it is full of light-hearted moments too. It does seem to be more for children, but in this book Bilbo take ... Continue

But it is full of light-hearted moments too. It does seem to be more for children, but in this book Bilbo takes possession of a seemingly harmless ring. Sixty years later, it will be a much more serious thing.
I first read this with my dad when I was four or five and this book has been a favorite comfort read ever since.
Read this years ago. One of my all time favorites.
A definite favorite.
Okay, I've mentioned before that I felt this book was just too tedious, too much detail and not enough action, but maybe I'm being unfair. I read this is 5th grade. Maybe one of these days I'll give it another try.
This is the first of Tolkein's books regarding the famous "Ring". I loved this book when I was required to read it in grade school...and I loved it again when I re-read it when the movies "The Lord of the Rings" series came out. Awesome.
Bilbo Baggins was a hobbit who wanted to be left alone in quiet comfort. But the wizard Gandalf came along with a band of homeless dwarves. Soon Bilbo was drawn into their quest facing evil orcs, savage wolves, giant spiders, and wose unknown dangers. Finally, it was Bilbo - alone and unaided - who ... Continue

1st read this in 7th grade & saw the cartoon. Have read this many times since then.
Reread many many years after my first (and second and third etc...) reading and The Hobbit is still a wonderful read. It reads almost as if it was spoken, not written. Not as dense or detailed as the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but sets in motion the events of that trilogy.
This is the class prequel to the LOTR trilogy. I never made it through the trilogy because I just thought The Hobbit was so much better! I read this for the first time in 5th grade. Its a great story - so fantastic and brilliant. It really is another world. One day I'll read the Trilogy... after I r ... Continue

This is one of several books that I have begun many times yet have not completed.

When I was a teenager, Tolkien's books became very popular. I am not a huge sci-fi/fantasy guy, but had heard how wonderful this was. Mr. Raspa, my 7th grade language/reading teacher, was the first person to mention this book to me. I recall his description of the wizard clearly.
Some day I will read this and enjoy it. I used to own a paperback version, but picked this hardback up in one of the many book clubs I have been in over the years.
