  • Book Review: 'Salem's Lot by Stephen King Share

The recent paperback release of 'Salem's Lot , Stephen King's second published novel, is a wonderful old-school vampire story, where the vampires aren't sparkly, or romantic, or James Dean cool — they are rampant, foul-smelling, and very, very evil. ... (read full critics)

When Stephen King was a horror writer

An early work by Stephen King; a slightly obvious view of vampirism (decades before it became all the rage) in an interesting albeit at times a bit stereotyped story - and Stephen King's own fascinating explanation of the Roanoke Colony mystery fitted in.

Not many books can frighten me, but this one crawled underneath my skin when I was a teenager. Especially Marks storyline and the nighly visits did me in, brrr.

At last, relief! Done it, finished, phew, that was a bit long. And who's dumb idea was it to add in the writer's edit - the alternative endings, short stories, etc? UN NECESSARY.

At last, relief! Done it, finished, phew, that was a bit long. And who's dumb idea was it to add in the writer's edit - the alternative endings, short stories, etc? UN NECESSARY.

Although I bit intimidated by the size of this tome - first off I thought this was surprisingly good. I was reading it because I'd avoided King in my youth and wanted a face-off with my prejudice. I also knew that an (awful) TV-movie had been made of this W-A-Y back, which I'd seen as a kid and had been scared poopless by it.

Anyhow, it pages-turns alright and King is really quite paint-a-picture-in-your-mind descriptive, in the first quarter. But ultimately, the plot runs out of breath and plods along, becoming predictable and with some characters left a little sparse - then abruptly disposed of and also, frankly, TOO many characters, finding myself often having to think really hard about who someone was exactly - someone who was sometimes not detailed too well, in the story.

I didn't bother with the "extras". Enough was enough, for me it was a novel that misfires and could have been better, probably if it'd lost a hundred and fifty pages - not gained any! Also, the edition I was reading, which I couldn't find on aNobii, had plenty of typos, which furrowed my brow a few too many times, pah!
