    • I read this book before reading any others in the Discworld series and it was still very enjoyable. If you need to, these books don't need to be read in order.

While not as consistently witty as subsequent Discworld novels, Pratchett here establishes the parameters of his amazing fantasy realm, inhabited by dwarves, trolls, vampires, witches - and ordinary folk. This first entry introduces the hapless Rincewind and his adventure with the tourist, Two Flower. Also introduced is one of the Discworld's most beloved denizens, The Librarian, whose metamorphosis is herein explained.

A must-read for any Pratchett fan, but it may not be the best jumping off point for any Discworld neophytes. I'd recommend "Guards! Guards!" for anyone wishing to find out what all the hoopla about Terry Pratchett is about. Or, my personal favorite and first Pratchett exposure, "Feet of Clay."
