Martyrs to hypochondria and general seediness, J. and his friends George and Harris decide that a jaunt up the Thames would suit them to a T. But when they set off, they can hardly predict the troubles that lie ahead with tow-ropes, unreliable weather-forecasts and tins of pineapple chunks - not to mention the devastation left in the wake of J.'s small fox-terrier Montmorency. Three Men in a Boat was an instant success when it appeared in 1889, and, with its benign escapism, authorial discursions and wonderful evocation of the late-Victorian 'clerking classes', it hilariously captured the spirit of its age.

Critics

  • Classics corner

On its publication in 1889, this rambling travelogue got sniffy reviews. The slang was vulgar, the characters common and the prose uneven. Though the criticisms can't be denied, neither can the warmth, humour or charm of Jerome K Jerome's book. And 1 ... (read full critics)

  • Probably it's my fault, but I couldn't appreciate the book at all. The humor is not really sparkling, and my knowledge of english is not that good. Finally I finished it.

  • Over 100 years after having been written, this book remains so funny that I found myself laughing out loud more than once - something that happens very very seldom to me.

  • I laughed the hardest for the first two chapters and then it just started to bore the socks off me.
I just don't get it, and I swear, i love British humor.
It was too forced and artificial, as it absolutely HAD to make you laugh.

I know, I know - everyone loves this book. I just found it mildly diverting. Well-done, of course, but not anything which captivated me or left a lingering impression. Comic, picaresque account of a journey down the Thames. I actually bought this to clarify Connie Willis' "To Say Nothing of the Dog" (taken from the parenthetical sub-line of this novel.) It's been touted as Bertie Wooster takes a trip, but I much prefer Wodehouse to this.
