I've no real idea how many times I've read Generation X; five times seems a highly conservative estimate and it could well be over double that amount. As a teenager it was something of an obsession and I became something of an evangelist for it and Coupland’s other books. My copy is well-used; battered and pock-marked. I've owned two or three others in my time, buying them to tide me over when I'd lent others to people and then eventually giving them away.

After all this time and reading and promotion it has to be a favourite, right? Maybe... It certainly used to be, but now I'm not so sure. I remain affectionate, nostalgic I guess, for this book but some of it's potency seems to have worn off, and I can’t commit myself to it the way I used to. I don’t think this is a maturity on my part, but neither do I think it’s a coherently reasoned opinion… something just doesn’t work any more, but what that is, either in the text or in myself, I really don’t know.

    • Coupland riesce a far capire una cultura pop che non ci appartiene, ma che è profondamente radicata nei suoi personaggi. Un po' come il Carosello e Uforobot per noi quarantenni, tanto per intendersi.

Book Description

Generation X is a field guide to and for the vast generation born in the late 1950s and the 1960s--a generation that has been erroneously labelled "postponed" and "indifferent". This is facto-fiction about a wildly accelerating subculture waiting in the corridor. [예스24 제공]
