This first novel in Alexander McCall Smith’s widely acclaimed The No. 1 Ladies Detective Agency series tells the story of the delightfully cunning and enormously engaging Precious Ramotswe, who is drawn to her profession to “help people with problems in their lives.” Immediately upon setting up shop in a small storefront in Gaborone, she is hired to track down a missing husband, uncover a con man, and follow a wayward daughter. But the case that tugs at her heart, and lands her in danger, is a missing eleven-year-old boy, who may have been snatched by witchdoctors.

The No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency received two Booker Judges’ Special Recommendations and was voted one of the International Books of the Year and the Millennium by the Times Literary Supplement.

  • The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency By Alexander McCall Smith

It's not often that one can call a detective series delightful, but that's the right adjective for the four books in Alexander McCall Smith's series, The No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency, now available on CD and perfectly narrated in the softly lilting ... (read full critics)

I had never heard about Alexander McCall Smith until an Australian bookcrosser and his wife visited Rome some years ago. We met for a dinner on a very rainy night, and Newk - that's his bookcrossing screen name - had brought with him what I called the bag of wonders. Basically, inside the big plastic bag there were all the books he and his wife had been reading during their journey throughout England, France and Italy, in addition to a platypus-shaped soft toy which I still keep on my shelf...
Most importantly, inside the bag there were 2 books of the A. McCall Smith's "N.1 Ladies' Detective Agency" series. I started to read the novels immediately, and it was love at first line.
Now I own an autographed copy of this first book I purchased for only 3 euros in Amsterdam, thing that made my love for this man and his books grew stronger.
I realize I haven't said anything about the book, shame on me. So I'll say it now: these novels are lovely, and delicate, humorous and melancholic at the same time. And if you read these books, and you don't fall in love with Mma Ramotswe, her chickens, her secretary, here to-be fiancee... well, you'd rather go to a doctor because there's something wrong with your heart...

  • Listening to the audio book edition. Will listen to the entire series, thanks to Lisette Lecat, who is an absolute delight.

Well that was a pleasant enough read, read in two sessions having started last night finished in the garden this afternoon. I just did not feel there was any real substance to the novel and like a previous reader will not be rushing to read the rest of the series. They will not be going on my wishlist but having said that if any other books by this author come my way I may read them.
    Synopsis:Amazon.co.uk
Wayward daughters. Missing Husbands. Philandering partners. Curious conmen. If you've got a problem, and no one else can help you, then pay a visit to Precious Ramotswe, Botswana's only - and finest - female private detective. Her methods may not be conventional, and her manner not exactly Miss Marple, but she's got warmth, wit and canny intuition on her side, not to mention Mr J.L.B. Maketoni, the charming proprietor of Tlokweng Road Speedy Motors. And Precious is going to need them all as she sets out on the trail of a missing child, a case that tumbles our heroine into a hotbed of strange situations and more than a little danger ...Delightfully different, THE NO.1 LADIES' DETECTIVE AGENCY offers a captivating glimpse of an unusual world.
