Set against the turbulent years of the Napoleonic  era, Alexandre Dumas's thrilling adventure story  is one of the most widely read romantic novels of  all time. In it the dashing young hero, Edmond  Dantès, is betrayed by his enemies and thrown  into a secret dungeon in the Chateau d'If -- doomed  to spend his life in a dank prison cell. The story  of his long, intolerable years in captivity, his  miraculous escape, and his carefully wrought  revenge creates a dramatic tale of mystery and intrigue  and paints a vision of France -- a dazzling,  dueling, exuberant France -- that has become immortal.

A story of anger and wit, passion and pride, grief and wealth. Edmond Dantès will spend 10 years of his life trying to avenge himself of all the suffering he has been a victim of. The plan is prepared in detail, the execution is carried on with care, but at the end there's THE doubt. The doubt that everything you have done for revenge was not worth it, the doubt that you haven't gone so far holding God's hand, but you've tried to play God instead, and it's not good.

"The sum of all human wisdom is contained in these two words: Wait and Hope"

This book is the epitomy of an epic tale! This is a tale of the folly of human selfishness, vengeance, and redemption. The author is a master of suspense and what sets him apart from the rest is his ability to reveal the entire story through dialogue rather than resorting to the easier method of telling you what the characters are thinking. He often speaks of the scene as if he is with the reader, in their shoes.

Several people have told me very good things about this book. If someone tells you the same, believe them.

I would also like to mention that the audiobook reader, Fred Williams, is hands down the best I've ever heard. But then again, Blackstone Audio is known for their readers.

Begun on the shore of the Pacific Ocean in Bahia Honda State Park in the Florida keys with the sound of the waves lulling me to sleep. Finished in Kingston, Ontario.

  • The adventurous aspects of the book are top notch, but the ending spoiled some of the fun. Also, Ali Pasha and his daughter were completely superfluous, Dumas' rebellion against romantic cliche was brave but detrimental. Watch the 2002 film for a tighter storyline and conclusion.
