Meet Ella Turner and Isabelle du Moulin - two women born centuries apart, yet bound by a fateful family legacy. When Ella and her husband move to a small town in France, Ella hopes to brush up on her French, qualify to practice as a midwife, and start a family of her own. Village life turns out to be less idyllic than she expected, however, and a peculiar dream of the color blue propels her on a quest to uncover her family's French ancestry. As the novel unfolds - alternating between Ella's story and that of Isabelle du Moulin four hundred years earlier - a common thread emerges that unexpectedly links the two women. Part detective story, part historical fiction, The Virgin Blue is a novel of passion and intrigue that compels readers to the very last page.

Tracy Chevalier's first book and possibly my favourite. Her wring is still developing but maybe because of that I like it so much. So deep and genuine. The part set in the past is always the best. The suffering seems terribly real and comes out from the pages of the book.

  • The Virgin Blue

The thread throughout this book is a colour blue, and the disturbing dreams of a young woman which tell the story of her ancestors in the 1500 in France. Very neatly done, the lives of the characters interlocking across the centuries. Well written, and very enjoyable reading.

The compelling story of two women, born centuries apart and the ancestral legacy that bins them. Historical fiction, suspense and romance are all to be found in this fascinating tale. The two stories run parallel through the book , but are not confusing as such a style can sometimes be.
My maiden name was actually Turner and I was fascinated by the French translation of Tournier, must take another look at the Family Tree and see if it apppears!
An excellent first novel and having read Girl With A Pearl Earring and now The Virgin Blue I am keen to read the rest of Tracy Chevaliers novels and will add them to My Wishlist. Certainly to be recommended to others.
