The masterpiece that started The New York Times bestselling epic Sword of TruthIn the aftermath of the brutal murder of his father, a mysterious woman, Kahlan Amnell, appears in Richard Cypher's forest sanctuary seeking help . . . and more. His world, his very beliefs, are shattered when ancient debts come due with thundering violence. In a dark age it takes courage to live, and more than mere courage to challenge those who hold dominion, Richard and Kahlan must take up that challenge or become the next victims. Beyond awaits a bewitching land where even the best of their hearts could betray them. Yet, Richard fears nothing so much as what secrets his sword might reveal about his own soul. Falling in love would destroy them--for reasons Richard can't imagine and Kahlan dare not say.In their darkest hour, hunted relentlessly, tormented by treachery and loss, Kahlan calls upon Richard to reach beyond his sword--to invoke within himself something more noble. Neither knows that the rules of battle have just changed . . . or that their time has run out. This is the beginning. One book. One Rule. Witness the birth of a legend.

  • i'm a fantasy nut so a book like this was perfect for me. it was a slow read but the amazing storyline filled with details made up for it. the ending was great. it left the reader with enough questions to want to pick up the second book of the series...which is exactly what i'm going to do.

  • So much better than I thought it would be! (I also thought it was from the 70s, and instead it was written in the early 90s XD)

  • The best book I have ever read!
The way it's written is amazing, and captivates you on each page.
It's the type of book that causes you to feel a connection with the characters. It's full of battles, fantasy worlds and emotion.
I'd recommend this book to everyone.

I didn't like this book very much and I don't think I'll buy the next volumes of the series.
The reason is only one: in my opinion, the story goes TOO fast and the characters are not well developed because they must keep up with it!
So many things happen that you would expect the characters to be at least confused, but no!
Richard discovers he is the wielder of the Sword and its power, he is going to be the strongest wizard in the world, he falls in love, his life changes completely... and all this he accepts in some ten pages and conforms to the changes without struggle!
Maybe I was used to Jordan's Rand, but I don't like this Richard at all.

Another (secondary) fault of Goodkind story is that you recognize some similarities between characters/events of "Wizard's first rule" and other books (the sorcerer with the deformed keeper of the Sword is almost the same as Brooks' two sorcerer sisters, the girl with that odd tool that tortures Richard is analogous to Jordan's Seanchans), but I insist this is only secondary.

If you enjoyed Jordan and Martin, I don't think you will appreciate this book.
If you like Ann Marston and similars, then buy this book too.
