  • Ian McKellen does an awesome job of reading. I don't agree with those who say it's difficult to distinguish the voices, maybe because the names are used often enough to know who's talking.

The only reason I gave it just 3 stars is that I have read so many young-adult fantasy books lately that I was really tired of the fantasy theme. Had I read it a couple years ago, I probably would have loved it.

Ian McKellen's voice provides a good narration for the book, with his usual precise diction, dramatic emphasis and perfect characterization of the secondary characters.
For some reason, however, he didn't seem to put the same effort in distinguishing Renn's voice from Torak's - a bit odd, considering the two are always together and talk to each other all the time. Though it is no problem if you read the book beforehand, this makes it sometimes hard to understand who's talking to who for a first-time listener.

  • Well paced and beautifully written

I discovered this through I-tunes but didn't like Ian McKellen's reading of it (I thought he was a bit too quiet and didn't read it with enough variation).
It's a good, well-paced adventure story which should appeal to all ages.
