Gramps says that I am a country girl at heart, and that is true.

Thirteen-year-old Salamanca Tree Hiddle, proud of her country roots and the "Indian-ness in her blood," travels from Ohio to Idaho with her eccentric grandparents. Along the way, she tells them of the story of Phoebe Winterbottom, who received mysterious messages, who met a "potential lunatic," and whose mother disappeared.

Beneath Phoebe's stories Salamanca's own story and that of her mother, who left on April morning for Idaho, promising to return before the tulips bloomed. Sal's mother has not, however, returned, and the trip to Idaho takes on a growing urgency as Salamanca hopes to get to Idaho in time for her mother's birthday and bring her back, despite her father's warning that she is fishing in the air.

This richly layered novel is in turn funny, mysterious, and touching. Sharon Creech's original voice tells a story like no other, one that readers will not soon forget.

The story started with Sara, a twelve-year old girl, who woke up one day and found her mother was leaving home. At first, she thought she was abandoned. The feeling of being betrayed by the beloved one was too unbearable for her. However, as the story unfolded, she began to understand the reason why her mother must leave. Accompanied by her grandparents, Sara followed her mother's traveling route in order to find the truth behind the scene.

I forgot whether I cried or not when i first read it , but this time I do.

It’s both joyful and tearful to complete the journey. And I'm blissful that I can do it again. It’s true that I am no longer the dreamy little girl, but I’m glad to know that some parts of me still remain the way it used to be.

  • During the summer I attended a reading workshop (teachers don't do anything during the summer, remember) and we were actually assigned to read this Newbury Award winning book. Fabulous prose. This is an excellent book for students to read.
