    Hey, this one was good.....

...not too melodramatic, and coherent. The vampires were believable and had motivations, and the general tone was extremely elegant. Just a few steps short of a classic.
Then Rice became a vampire for money, and you all saw what happened.

Anne Rice modernized the erotic vampire tale when she published Interview with the Vampire. I read this in college and decided with all the new vampire hype to read it again. At first, I was disappointed because I remember it being mesmerizing. Halfway through, I remembered why I loved it so much. Louis and Lestat's relationship created much of the storyline but the addition of Armand at the end brings the story to a closing point. Claudia is the epitome of a spoiled brat but you cannot help but empathize with her position. I am on to the next one.

This series started off wonderfully, but as it dragged on it got to be more about sex and politics than about being a vampire and it got less interesting.

  • The problem of the vampire

This book is a good initial examination of human morality through the eyes of an immortal. Does human morality still play in a being so different, yet so similar to humans? Should the vampire itself feel it is a devil and a fiend? Or should the vampire embrace itself and forget humanity?

An interesting examination of gender roles. In this story procreation and sex (making other vampires by sucking blood!) Have nothing to do with being male or female as both previously human sexes can do this with equal capability.

Tries to examine the problem of religion once the characters are aware that they are no longer human and supernatural things can happen. This is explored more and better in the future titles in the series.

  • Well written and intelligent, unlike today's so called "vampire" series. First read this in school and loved it from the beginning not only because of the way Rice created her vampires but also how it steered away from traditional "boy meets girl and fall in love" that most stories have.
