  • A Quiet Belief in Angels By R.J. Ellory

When it comes to selecting their next read, lovers of literature are familiar with the adage “don’t judge a book by its cover.” Whether most people actually subscribe to this rule is debatable, but the advice is particularly sage when considering Eng ... (read full critics)

I like the title, quiet belief, sounds like something that has a long and lingering effect. It suits the book well. This is not an intense, exciting thriller, it's more of a gripping, heart breaking outline of a criminal case and the lasting painful effect it brings about.

The book is uncommonly beautifully written with very poetic sentences.

Nevertheless, the book is far too sad. Not that I am complaining, but I was sobbing through the second half, and was wondering where the angels were. And perhaps the most heartbreaking bit is how Joseph carries all the load, believing that he has to be the guardian angels to people around.

A good read on the whole. Wouldn't mind reading more of his work.

A beautiful book which spans 77 years across America, from the dust-bowl, across 7 states, and in the later stages New York.

I've not read such an engaging novel for a long time, this surely is my favourite book in the last few years - suspenseful, dark and full of twists. At times the emotional punch of this book made me feel shaky, but i never once considered putting it down, gripped as i was.

I read this book in 4 days - all i can suggest is that you buy this book, and settle down for it to enrapture you.

On paper this book has the potential to be great, a real page-turning thriller, but sadly the whole thing was too slow, not intense enough

  • From the blurb: "Joseph Vaughan's life has been dogged by tragedy. Growing up in the 1950s, he was at the centre of series of killings of young girls in his small rural community. From the blurb: "Joseph Vaughan's life has been dogged by tragedy. Growing up in the 1950s, he was at the centre of series of killings of young girls in his small rural community. The girls were taken, assaulted and left horribly mutilated. Barely a teenager himself, Joseph becomes determined to try to protect his community and classmates from the predations of the killer. Despite banding together with his friends as ' The Guardians', he was powerless to prevent more murders - and no one was ever caught. Only after a full ten years did the nightmare end when the one of his neighbours is found hanging from a rope, with articles from the dead girls around him. Thankfully, the killings finally ceased. But the past won't stay buried - for it seems that the real murderer still lives and is killing again. And the secret of his identity lies in Joseph's own history... "
Seems like a gory run-of-the-mill murder story, but wow.. such powerful writing! I loved this book and am determined to read more by this author.
