  An amazing book. I can't believe I waited so long to read it. An near-encyclopedic vision of France, Paris, French history, and French culture/society. And about as thrilling a story as you get in much lesser works.

  This epic is fantastic, interesting but LOOOONNNGGGGGG. =) Seriously, the musical does you a favour by summarising most of the highlights in the book so even if you don't read Les Miserables, you could still get the gist of it from the musical.

  Honestly, I wasn't into classics. Before, I find them boring that it can activate my snooze mode button.

  Good thing this book changed my view about Classic novels.

  Once again, this book was required and recommended by our fourth year English teacher. Unlike The Good Earth, we were required to pass a paper for each chapter.

  At first when I was reading the book, I was like, "whaaaat?!"

  But while getting through each chapters of the book, I got hooked.

  I didn't finish reading the book back then.

  That is why last May 01, I decided to grab and finish the book.

  I was intrigued on what will happen to Jean Valjean and Cosette.

  At first I thought Jean Valjean will not survive the chase between him and Javert but eventually he did while protecting Cosette at all cost.

  I admire Jean Valjean's character, how he'd turn into a good person who helps those who are in need and will not boast about it. It doesn't matter to him if others do him bad as long as he is doing good to them. He can be a saint or a hero for his deeds.

  Speechless.

  No words can describe how good Jean Valjean is.

  Basically, this book shows us the reality of life -- poverty, injustices, discrimination, the cruelty of the world.

  But in the end, one will still reach that self-fulfillment one day despite all the hardships and struggles in life.

  I will end this with another quote:

  "Books are cold but sure friends."

  (I agree, not just a friend but Book is one of my boyfriends, the other is Music :D )

  Les Miserables is a delicate novel. Every mood, thought, and behavior of a character is so in detail that I almost felt I was one of the characters in that world. Sometimes, it surprised me, not only making me laugh but sorrow. The contradiction between people is so often. I once felt like I was chatting with Victor Hugo. We shared plenty of opinions with each other. I even imagined making friends with him.
  The chapters designed are interesting. Most of them are the names from the characters. It seems to tell people that the life of everyone is unique, yet the wheel of fortune makes people being together. Each decision a person makes will certainly affect others. As the result, should people only follow what the fate gives them? No! In the novel, everyone tried their best struggling for their life. How could people give up?
  All in all, “face” is not only to the world but to oneself!

  I first read it when I was eleven. I was deeply attracted by this fantastic epic at that time but it was something recent that I started to understand the historical, social, political and religious matters behind the story.
