I usually worry when I've discovered an author through their second book, that I'll be disappointed with the first. Not the case here. "Drown" is Junot Diaz's first book. A collection of short stories based on his childhood in the Dominican Republic and beyond. An amazingly clear voice tells of the growing pains of a boy growing up poor in the Dominican Republic with an absent father, strong mother, tough brother in a world that is hard to escape from. The side story of the father who is torn between his Dominican life and a new one in the North, makes this more than an immigrant coming of age story. Diaz's extraordinary second book "The Brief Wonderous Life of Oscar Wao" won the Pulitzer in 2007 among others.
