I want to read Poe's "true" book. I say "true" because I read an adapted version and I'm reading the Spanish translation. Maybe when I have a good level of English.

What is the story concerned about

The story consists of eight different tales which are filled with supernatural and mysterious elements. The first one, which is named the Pit and the Pendulum, we can get to know how a poor man suffered terribly and eventually got away from the judges even though he supposed he would die. The second story is the Black Cat regarding a couple living with their pets, it seems to be happy at the beginning of the story. All the pets were killed by their master after he became madder and madder. The mad man also murdered his wife in accident because of something unbelievable driving him to be disordered. Reading thoroughly the story book, there are some painful and heart-breaking tragedies from the third, fourth, sixth and seventh we can be aware of. One of those told us the story happened in Paris, the unfortunate victims they were mother and daughter were found in death and treated cruelly in their house. However, the murder made the police confused with the case and didn’t be clear what the clue they could chase on in order to realize and seize the murderer. A man who had an ability to observe details, he assisted the police to find out the murderer was an ape escaped from its owner and finally let the innocent bank clerk return to free. Some Words with a Mummy is the most interesting and readable story in the book, we will be amazed that why the mummy could be alive again by a particular experiment.

My favourite character in the story and why I am interested in

I think my favourite character is Mr Dupin who is the main role in the third tale, the Murder in the Street of Death. He can always discover what the connection between the things is though they seem to be not important by his peculiar ability of observation. We all can understand how he assist the police to find out the murderer in a case happened in Paris with his talent. I appreciated his personality very much because he is a thoughtful and careful man From this story we can get to learn is all the complicating matters is based on the simple things. We should think a matter as thoroughly as we can while facing the difficulties. On the other hand, we can not allow ourselves to give up randomly as well as need to try our best to achieve the advance even if the problem can not be solved at last. Nothing is impossible, we must trust ourselves we are able to work out the difficulties that is confusing us.

  • I felt that I should like this as Poe is so lauded, but it was not enjoyable to read at all, and felt more like work. Some of the stories were quite good, but others seemed to be single, half-formed ideas that are dragged on for page after page toward a completely unsatisfying end.

  • Poe was a genius of early horror stories. I think he made Lovecraft look like an amateur.
