作者以隨筆形式評論明朝歷史的種種。本書分三部份，第一部分論人，第二部分論社會百相，第三部分論文化。作者揭示在極端專制主意君權統治下的黑獄──詔獄中，無辜者怎樣被折磨致死、皇帝如何被神化、張居正的悲劇及教訓等。
他也寫明朝的風俗與民生，如“開門七件事”、“吃他娘……”的由來，明代的流氓意識、對神童的迷信、塾師的辛酸等等。全書更配以來自國家博物館、故宮博物院、大學圖書館的豐富插圖。
