    I love the movie "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" by David Fincher, one of my favourite directors. This epic about the larger-than-life Benjamin Button and the history of 20th century America is a classic and deserves a nod from the Oscar.

    I saw the film first and then read the short story by American literary cult figure, F. Scott Fitzgerald. In the film, the peculiar life of Benjamin, who was born a septuagenarian and grew younger as time went by, is fascinating. But it is the love story of Benjamin and Daisy that moves me. The two of them knew each other when they were kids (with Benjamin in an 80-year old body though) and were destined for each other, but fate had them fall in love 30 years later - in their middle-age when their lives crossed each other's path at the right moment. "We're meeting in the middle. We finally caught up with each other." The whole thing is unbelievable and is like science fiction, but love can make anything explicable and possible. "Loving you is worth everything", said Daisy. Both poignant and romantic, this line will stay with me forever.

    The film is adapted from Fitzgerald's story of the same name contained in this collection of his short stories. "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" is the shortest of the 7 stories in this collection: it is 28-page long only. The film just used the theme of a man growing young from 80 to infancy and gave it a completely different plot. Compared with the film, Fitzgerald's story is simpler, probably because it started in 1860 and ended in around 1930s, with a more stable historical backdrop than post-WWII America. However, one thing that the book did better than the film is the subtle depiction of Benjamin's feelings towards growing young under the eyes of other normal people who were always moving forward and couldn't empathize with his plight. The sadness and hopelessness of Benjamin are never captured in the film (maybe due to the not-so-satisfactory performance of Brad Pitt), but are brilliantly manifested in the novel, thanks to the marvellous writing of Fitzgerald.

    The other 6 stories are also enjoyable, though they are less imaginative. All of them are about how city-dwellers in late 19th to early 20th century America struggled with the woes and gains brought about by the Industrial Revolution, WWI, uncertainty and life. The collection showcases the eclectic style of Fitzgerald. For example, "The Cut-Glass Bowl" - about a family whose fortunes were dogged by an ill-meant gift - is mystery fiction. "O Russet Witch!" - about a man's life-long infatuation with a gorgeous woman - is a psychological thriller. "May Day", which aptly captures the chaos, gloom and bleakness in post-WWI New York, is a tragedy.

    If you are used to reading modern literature or popular fiction, you may find Fitzgerald's work a bit slow with little action and few surprises. But the story-telling technique of Fitzgerald is unique. You've got to read one of his works to make your reading experience complete. If "The Great Gatsby" or "Tender is the Night" is too heavy, try this short story collection.

  • The tale and the screenplay

  • If you saw the movie and liked it, and even more if you didn't like it a lot... read the tale. It's very much different from the screenplay, somehow harder, a lot less romantic, and personally, after reading it, I thought much better of the screen adaptation. They're both very clever stories

    Dopo aver finito di leggere questo piccolo romanzo, mi è rimasto un senso di tristezza e mi è scesa anche qualche lacrimuccia...

    è una storia fondamentalmente triste anche se Fitzgerald, a mio avviso, la racconta in maniera strabiliante poiché riesce a non impietosire, a non annoiare ma anzi a narrarla in maniera divertente, irriverente e talvolta quasi grottesca.
    è la storia di Benjamin Button che anziché invecchiare col passare del tempo, come tutti noi, man mano che cresce, diventa più giovane.

    Si troverà sin dai primi momenti della sua vita in difficoltà poiché quando nasce ha più di 70 anni e suo padre, Roger Button, non lo accetta; si troverà in sintonia con il nonno, invece, con il quale passerà molto tempo a fumare e discutere dei fatti più importanti del giorno.
    L'età con la quale si sentirà più a suo agio, sarà quella dei 50 anni grazie alla quale conoscerà l'amore e tutte le sensazioni e gli sconvolgimenti che non aveva mai provato prima.
    Ma le difficoltà di Benjamin continuano poiché, crescendo (e quindi, nel suo caso, ringiovanendo) è sempre in disaccordo con gli altri della sua età: inizia a sentirsti troppo piccolo, troppo basso, non riesce ad apprendere come gli altri bambini della scuola elementare poiché sembra che siano ad un livello superiore. Per lui, tutto è complicato e alla fine, Benjamin, dovrà fare affidamento sulla tata Nana: solo lei lo cura amorevolmente come una madre mancata, solo lei lo nutre, lo fa giocare, lo fa saltare sul letto, lo veste e lui grazie a Nana si sente protetto.
    L'ultimo capitolo, l'undicesimo, è sicuramente il più toccante ed è quello che mi ha fatto piangere.

    Sicuramente è un racconto che merita di essere letto, non solo per la storia di Benjamin - curiosa, originale, a tratti divertente - ma per riflettere sulla diversità (cosa che ai giorni nostri viene, molto spesso, criticata e guardata con occhi poco comprensivi) e sul senso della vita.
    Che cosa succederebbe se nascessimo vecchi e morissimo giovani? Sarebbe meglio o sarebbe peggio? Mi vengono in mente queste parole dette da Woody Allen sulla vita:

    La vita? Dovrebbe essere vissuta al contrario.
    Tanto per cominciare si dovrebbe iniziare morendo, e così tàcchete, il trauma è bello che superato.
    Quindi ti svegli in un letto di ospedale e apprezzi il fatto che vai migliorando giorno dopo giorno.
    Poi ti dimettono perché stai bene, e la prima cosa che fai è andare alla posta a ritirare la tua pensione, e te la godi al meglio. Col passare del tempo le tue forze aumentano, il tuo fisico migliora, le rughe scompaiono.
    Poi inizi a lavorare, e il primo giorno ti regalano un orologio d’oro. Lavori quarant’anni finchè sei così giovane da sfruttare adeguatamente il ritiro dalla vita lavorativa.
    Quindi vai di festa in festa, bevi, giochi, fai sesso, e ti prepari per iniziare a studiare. Poi inizi la scuola, giochi con gli amici, senza alcun tipo di obblighi e responsabilità. Finchè non sei bebè.
    Quando sei sufficientemente piccolo, ti infili in un posto che ormai dovresti conoscere molto bene. Gli ultimi nove mesi te li passi nuotando tranquillo e sereno, in un luogo riscaldato, con servizio di camera e tanto affetto, senza che nessuno ti rompa i coglioni.
    E alla fine abbandoni questo mondo in un orgasmo.

    Un piccolo capolavoro in cui anche Fitzgerald si interroga sulla vita e crea una storia, quella di Benjamin, proprio per farci capire a fondo la diversità delle varie fasi della vita (in questo caso capovolte e quindi con un ordine di lettura diverso) e il modo di pensare e di agire che ognuno di noi ha nei diversi momenti dell'esistenza poiché noi stessi cambiamo con il tempo, proprio come cambia Benjamin.

    Per ridere, per riflettere, per piangere.

  • 看經典，學英文? 這本對想把英文學好的人太難了! 因為這是大約90年前出版的書，用字淺詞都與現在英文大不相同，想 要完整的了解這本書，要嘛就跟中文版對照，要嘛就準備好好的查字典 吧!

    說來很神奇 我看到頭幾頁就確定原著跟電影的劇情完全不一樣 但看完後 卻跟看完那部電影後感受幾乎一樣 沒有突兀或是 "什麼啊" 的那種遺憾

    原著跟劇本各走各的路 除了年紀倒退長這個主軸是一樣的外 如果退後一步來看 真的好像分別欣賞一本書跟另一部電影 沒有哪一個比另一個加分 (就像往常我們比較原著跟電影一樣)

    這部電影的導演跟編劇可以用這樣不同的劇情或不管是什麼方法忠實表 達這(短短的)精采原著 只能說 真的是太神奇了 可以感受到紐扣先生的寂寞 也為他感 ... Continue
