Uno di questi metodi è il cosiddetto "sistema del passero", sperimentato con sanguinoso ma straordinario successo in Colombia. I primi paramilitari degli anni quaranta, epoca d'inizio dell'inesauribile guerra civile colombiana, venivano infatti chiamati "pajaros" per la loro capacità di agire e scomparire rapidamente, senza lasciare traccia. Ma il libro pone in risalto anche come la tendenza alla "privatizzazione dell'uso della forza" vada ben al di là della Colombia e sia evidente in tutti i moderni conflitti di ogni tipo.
