I liked the descriptions of the characters: the Jewish grandfather of the main character Daniel, the Jewish mother of his best friend, the Roman barkeeper... But I missed some action or storyline in the book. The (Italian) language was sometimes difficult to understand for a non-native speaker as myself, with a lot of "trendy" words, long sentences (maybe a homage to Proust).
I also failed to empathize with the teenager frustrations of the main character Daniel who (as teenagers do) sees each personal, often marginal, problem, as a fundamental life issue.
Maybe much of my disappointment came from the fact somebody told me about similarities between Alessandro Piperno and the Dutch writer Anton Grunberg. In fact, it seems to me that, apart from their Jewish origins, they are rather opposites. I just began a new Grunberg book and I notice how accurate and clear his language is compared to the "baroque" style of Piperno.
