Poco prima dello scoppio della seconda guerra mondiale, Heinrich Harrer riesce a farsi accettare come membro di una spedizione tedesca sulle cime himalayane. Il settembre 1939, quando si trovava nel nord dell'India, viene internato in un campo di prigionia inglese. Solo al terzo tentativo, con un compagno, riesce a raggiungere il Tibet a piedi e, dopo aver superato difficoltà insormontabili, riesce a raggiungere la città santa di Lhasa. Accolto nella migliore società, ha l'opportunità, primo occidentale, di conoscere e descrivere i costumi degli abitanti, diventa, infine, amico e confidente del giovanissimo Dalai Lama. A guerra finita tornerà in Germania ma il legame con la civiltà tibetana segnerà per sempre la sua vita.
