  A group of students under the influence of a charismatic teacher. They have dinner at her house, tell her their worries and woes and she in turn tells them almost nothing. She is the quintessential sympathetic listener without identity, and the students become almost frantic to provide her with their own projected identity. And then Something Happens.

  I loved it. The story is great, the style is great, the main characters are believable, lovable and a little silly. The theme and tone reminded me of 'The secret history'. If you loved that one, try this.

  Teoria e pratica di ogni cosa

  Mi piacciono le liste, le citazioni. Il libro ne è pieno. Ne ridonda. E poi scivola dentro un'ossessione. La seconda parte rotola. Arrivi alla fine e sono quasi 700 pagine.

Un esercizio di virtusosismo, postmoderno, in cui sono combinati assieme i classici del canone con la cultura pop, giovanilistica americana.   Tra gli scrittori emergenti questo è un romanzo dei più interessanti, letto in inglese. Un esercizio di virtusosismo, postmoderno, in cui sono combinati assieme i classici del canone con la cultura pop, giovanilistica americana. Ma il colpo di scena c'è e lascia un senso di sopresa a cui la mente ritorna con piacere. La trama non è male e alla fine si priva un senso di amarezza e perdita tale a quello che deve aver provato la protagonista alla fine della sua storia, o meglio quando la sua storia di ragazza prodigio americana, per motivi di fanta-politica implode. Non so come sia la traduzione italiana, ma la prosa inglese è godibilissima e di alto livello.

  A terrific book! A compelling story, written in an original language, packed with irony, sadness, and quotes both from high and pop culture.

  It explores so many topics: what it's like to be a teenager, social dynamics in an American high school, father-daughter relationships; dealing with the loss of loved ones, with growing up and with disillusionment. The writer manages all this without ever getting boring, pretentious or whiny on the reader.

  It sort of slows down in the middle, but since the last part is like a roller-coaster, that doesn't really matter. I stumbled upon it in a library, and I am so very glad I found it: it kept me fantastic company for just over a week. Definitely recommended!

Libro ondivago, comincia come un romanzo di formazione adolescenziale, e termina come un giallo/nero, anche se (e soprattutto) la fine non risolve le situazioni creatisi. L'avevo comprato per il titolo ed i titoli dei capitoli (per tacere del fatto che venisse gratuito con l'acquisto di altri due libri), mi piace per le citazioni (vere? false?) ad ogni pie' sospinto, le metafore e le similitudini. La (mia) travagliata storia di lettura mi ha fatto apprezzare metà delle qualità, ma anche così rimane un bel libro.
