Book Description
L'arcidiacono di Notre-Dame, Claude Frollo, si innamora della celebre danzatrice zingara Esmeralda. Incarica perciò il grottesco campanaro della cattedrale, il gobbo Quasimodo, di rapirla. Ma il capitano Phoebus de Chateaupers la trae in salvo e conquista il suo amore. Frollo uccide Phoebus facendo ricadere su Esmeralda la colpa del delitto. Quasimodo intanto, commosso da un atto di gentilezza di lei, diventa quasi un suo schiavo e la conduce a Notre-Dame per proteggerla. Dopo una serie di peripezie, Esmeralda verrà catturata e fatta impiccare sotto gli occhi di Frollo, che osserva impassibile l'esecuzione. Quasimodo, disperato, ucciderà Frollo e poi, con il cadavere della donna tra le braccia, si lascerà morire a sua volta.
