    Che teneri insieme!

"Why must you always be so difficult?" wondered Lord Maccon in utter exasperation.
Alexia grinned. "No soul?" she suggested.
    "No sense!" corrected the earl.

The Loontwills returned from their shopping expedition flushed with success. Except for Squire Loontwill, who was now less flush than he had been and wore an expression more often seen on men returning from battle -one that had been badly lost with many casualties.

I do not want to die -thought Alexia- I have not yet yelled at Lord Maccon for his most recent crass behavior!

"Let us be perfectly clear here", said Squire Loontwill. "You are willing to marry our Alexia, even though she is... Well...", he floundered.
Felicity came to his rescue. "Old".
    Evylin added, "And plain".
    "And tan" said Felicity.
[...] Lord Maccon glanced about at Alexia's family. No wonder she devalued herself, growing up in this kind of environment.
He looked at Felicity. "What should I possibly want with a silly chit out of the schoolroom?" At Evylin. "PErhaps our ideas on beauty do not ally with one another. I find your sister's appearance quite pleasing".

As though her family were not watching, he touched the side of her face, stroking the cheek her mother had hit. "I understand that you have been taught for far too long that you are unworthy".
Miss Tarabotti felt inexplicably like crying. She turned her face away from his caress.

The vampire's eyes were open, and he was staring at her intently. It was as though he were trying to speak to her with simply the power of a glare.
    Alexia did not speak glare-ish.

Alexia Tarabotti is from Italian descent, she's a spinster and not particularly appealing for the Victorian standars of London society. Her father is dead and she inherited his dark complexion and his soulless state. At a ball, our heroine manages to kill a vampire, which is not a very difficult task for her; Being preternatural that means born without soul, she has the ability of turning all supernatural beings into human again by touching them and only as long as she keeps a physical contact. Lord Maccon, a Scottish, grumpy but goodlooking werewolf is sent by the Queen to investigate. A funny and unconventional novel on vampires, werewolves and other supernatural beings. It was fun to read it!

  • Not really my style. It wasn't a bad book but it is skewed more to women's than to a man's like me. If you like fashion and clothes you mite give this book a try but if you look for more action stay away.

  • A promising start

A fun book, with sexy characters and good atmosphere. The detective element has room for improvement and I will definitely be reading the other books in the series.
