Honestly, I don't think it is easy to read. The book is not for everyone who lacks the understanding of historical background and unique cultural context of Turkey. It is not about the inter-play between the Italian slave and his Turkish master, but the notions of identity and the contrast and synth ... (continue)

Honestly, I don't think it is easy to read. The book is not for everyone who lacks the understanding of historical background and unique cultural context of Turkey. It is not about the inter-play between the Italian slave and his Turkish master, but the notions of identity and the contrast and synthesis in western-eastern idea, which Turkey, due to its geographical position of the world, has to deal with. Pamuk is not a straightforward writer, and maybe this story is an ambiguous work about his recognition of being a Turk. I have to admit that I am not the one being able to appreciate the subtleties of the character's conflicts, yet it makes me to think more about self/others, and what makes us who we are.
