    Fragile Things , come per Smoke and Mirrors, anche in questa raccolta di racconti non manca nulla: favole, fantasy, orrore, gotico, fantascienza e un pizzico di sesso.

    Molti dei racconti hanno ricevuto premi e il più famoso è sicuramente A Study in Emerald, vincitore del premio Hugo come miglior racconto breve. A Study in Emerald, come dice Gaiman, è una storia in cui i personaggi di Conan Doyle incontrano le creazioni da incubo di Lovecraft. Oltre al racconto sono molto bizzarre le introduzioni ai vari capitoli, dei brevi annunci pubblicitari nei quali si riconoscono personaggio divenuti famosi alla fine dell'800, eccone uno
    PROBLEMI DI FEGATO?! ATTACCHI DI BILE?! DISTURBI NEVRASTENICI?! ANGINA?! ARTRITE?! Questi sono solo alcuni dei disturbi che un DISSANGUATORE professionista può curare. Nei nostri uffici abbiamo estorto TESTIMONIANZE che possono essere verificate dal pubblico in ogni momento. Non mettete le vostre vite in mano ad amatori. Noi lo facciamo daa lungo tempo: V.TEPES - DISSANGUATORE PROFESSIONISTA. (Ricordate! Si pronunca Tzsep-pesh!!). Romania, Parigi, Longra, Whitby.
    Avete provato il resto - ORA PROVATE IL MEGLIO!!!

    Familiare vero?

    Ma più che questo racconto i miei preferiti sono: October in the Chair in cui i mesi dell'anno si riuniscono attorno a un falò per raccontarsi storie; Sunbird dove i membri di un club dedicato all'assaggio delle pietanze più strane si mette alla ricerca di un raro uccello; Goliath, scritto per una raccolta di racconti ambientato nel mondo di Matrix; Forbidden Brides of the Faceless Slaves in the Secret House of the Night of Dread Desire, che ha per protagonista uno scrittore, che abita in un castello infestato, il quale è in crisi e non riesce a scrivere racconti reali derivando sempre verso il fantasy, o quello che lui definisce tale; Harlequin Valentine, in cui un Arlecchino cerca di sedurre in un modo un po' orrorifico la sua Colombina nel giorno di San Valentino.

    Nel racconto conclusivo, The Monarch of the Glen, ritroviamo Shadow, il protagonista di American Gods, invischiato ancora nelle trame di antiche divinità e mostri in un angolo sperduto della Scozia.

    Sia in quest'ultimo racconto che in Keepsakes and Treasures, incontriamo due figure molto particolari: Mr. Alice, un ricco signore che non bada a spese per soddisfare le sue passioni e i suoi desideri, e Mr. Smith il suo efficientissimo assistente. Spero che Gaiman dedichi qualche altro racconto, se non addirittura un romanzo, a questi due intriganti e misteriosi personaggi.

    Non mancano poesie, una di queste, intitolata Intructions, fornisce simpatiche istruzioni se si dovesse finire in un mondo fantasy, e favole riprese e reinventate come Barbablu in The Hidden Chamber, e Narnia in The Problem of Susan, e Le Mille e una Notte in Inventing Aladdin.

    Da non perdere l'introduzione che, come per la precedente raccolta, contiene a sua volta un breve racconto.

    Questa è solo la quarta di copertina di Fragile Things, scritta dallo stesso Gaiman:

    Lascia che ti racconti storie dei mesi dell'anno, di fantasmi e cuori infranti, di terrore e desiderio.
    Lascia che ti racconti di bevute fino a tardi e telefoni senza risposta, di buone azioni e brutti giorni, di distruzioni e ricostruzioni, di uomini morti che camminano e padri perduti, di piccole fanciulle Francesi a Miami, di lupi sinceri e di come parlano alle ragazze.

    Ci sono storie nelle storie, sussurrate nelle orecchie nella quiete della notte, gridate sopra il boato del giorno, e recitate tra amanti e nemici, stranieri e amici. Ma tutte, tutte sono cose fragili, fatte unendo solo 26 lettere sistemate e risistemate ancora e ancora per formare racconti e immagini che, se glie lo permetti, abbaglieranno la tua immaginazione e ti commuoveranno fin nel profondo del tuo cuore.

    Il resto è tutto da scoprire.

    Nota a margine: come per Smoke and Mirrors l'edizione inglese di Fragile Things, che ho io, differisce da quella americana.
    Per esempio l'edizione americana contiene Fifteen Painted Cards from a Vampire Tarot non presente in quella inglese in quanto il racconto era già contenuto nell'edizione inglese di Smoke and Mirrors. Quindi attenzione a comprare le edizioni.

    Sia sempre lode a Neil Gaiman.
    Fragile Things è una bella raccolta di racconti, in cui c'è di tutto, proprio di tutto. Favole dark, storielle apparentemente per bambini, racconti tipicamente noir con una punta di magico in più; ma anche racconti tristemente reali, e altri decisamente visionari e surreali. E anche poesie, piccoli componimenti scritti, ad esempio, per una figlia, e così via.
    In questa preziosissima raccolta troviamo proprio il meglio di Neil Gaiman. Per questo, devo ammettere una nota stonata (che riguarda però non l'autore, ma l'editore): una parte dei racconti li conoscevo già. Alcuni ("Sunbird", "How to talk to girls at parties", "October in the chair") sono presenti nella raccolta "M is for Magic" (dedicata ad un pubblico più omogeneo e giovanile). Poi ci sono racconti che ho conosciuto trasformati in fumetto: "Goliath", in Matrix Comics, e soprattutto "Harlequin Valentine", pubblicato come graphic novel a se stante (e decisamente superiore alla versione di solo testo). Il tutto è arricchito poi dall'ultimo grande racconto, che ripropone piacevolmente Shadow, il protagonista del suo fortunatissimo romanzo "American Gods". E in cui troviamo anche i due strani Mr. Alice & Smith, protagonisti di un altro racconto.

    Ci sarebbe poi un'altra nota stonata (che però non mi ha convinto ad abbassargli il voto): molti racconti non sono proprio eccezionali, alcuni mi hanno lasciato perplesso, altri invece li avrei visti benissimo come graphic novel, piuttosto che come semplice racconto.

    Infine, per la lettura in inglese, devo ammettere che non è stato facile: un conto è "M is for Magic", che si trova nell'angolo "letteratura per l'infanzia", un conto è "Fragile Things", decisamente più maturo ed adulto, a cominciare dal profilo linguistico.

    This collection of short stories, although not as wonderful as "Smoke And Mirrors", is really a collection of jewels.
    It demonstrates that Gaiman gives the best when he tells short stories (or not-really-long novels), when he can play with the characters, the ideas, the styles.
    He is a storyteller, and he plays with this role, play with the stories to obtain the most astonishing results.

    Two and a half stars.
    Some of the stories are good, some just all right, some quite pointless. I didn't care much for most of the stories in the first half of the book. Quite surprisingly, most of them won an award of some sort; which either speaks regards the quality of the stories which were submitted to such competitions, or it means that I am not as clever a reader as I think.
    The last few stories of the book seemed to me to stand far above the rest. "Goliath", set in the Matrix universe, is intelligent and highly enjoyable; "How to talk to girls at parties" is strikingly original; I also enjoyed "Sunbird", and I was delighted to meet Shadow again, in "The monarch of the Glen".
    Four stars to all the stories I mentioned; the rest, unfortunately, drags the overall rating down.

  • I love a book of good short stories that I can read inbetween everything else in life.
    And this was one of the better ones. Quirky poems and some stories that leave you to your imagination as to what happened. In short..LOVE this book.
