  • The Quiet American

Greene’s brilliant, thought-provoking, novel is set in Vietnam. It is 1952 and the country is trying to regain independence from the French. This is the background for a story that is ostensibly about love and political intrigue, yet works well on a ... (read full critics)

  • Graham Greene: The Quiet American

I read most of Graham Greene’s novels a decade or more ago, in my early 20s, and ended with great admiration for his extraordinary fertile period from the late 1930s to 1950s, when he produced a string of masterpieces, the best being also the most we ... (read full critics)

    A splendid book.
A novel about love, about war, about friendship.
A novel about love and friendship in time of war.
Last but not least, a politic book.

Impeccabile Graham Green!
"I am not involved. Not involved, I repeated. It had been an article of my creed. The human condition being what it was, let them fight, let them love. let them murder, I would not be involved. My fellow journalists called themselves correspondents; I preferred the title of reporter. I wrote what I saw. I took no action. Even an opinion is a kind of action."

  • Yes, I liked this novel. Takes place in Indo-China during the early 1950's when the French were fighting the Vietminh. Greene comments upon the ethical situation and deals with the moral problems that arise. The characters discuss these things and explore the problem of good and evil. A good book.
