Fat Kid Rules the WorldBlog this item
    • Loved it.
    • The Kurt Cobain double was a little lame! Great book for kids who just don't fit in and are trying to find themselves. Drugs, music, and being fat. Some strong content. 7th and up.

I enjoyed this book. I listened to the first half and then finished reading from the text. I think Going brought up some serious issues while makeing them humerous, ie. obesity, drug abuse, teen homelessness, etc. I think it would be a good choice for book club.It was a Printz Honor Book in 2004.Quotesp. 115 [Curt's speaking] "I knew it." he says solemnly. "Curt," I said to myself, "This is the coolest person you will ever meet."It's thte moment in my [Troy] life I've been waiting for ever since I gained weight. The camera zooms in, the music swells, the crowd does the wave. I want to laugh or cry, but in the end I only sit there and blink, knowing the mement will disappear as soon as I take my next breath.p.129 [Curt says to Troy] ...just suggesting you play the music not the drums How often do we focus on the specifics and stress over that when what is important is the "music"?Questions to think aboutOn page 112 Troy talks about committing to the band and how people don't think fat people can commit to anything because if they could they wouldn't be fat. Do you think this is true? Why or why not?

Book Description

Troy Billings is seventeen, 296 pounds, friendless, utterly miserable, and about to step off a New York subway platform in front of an oncoming train. Until he meets Curt MacCrae, an emaciated, semi-homeless, high school dropout guitar genius, the stuff of which Lower East Side punk rock legends are made. Never mind that Troy's dad thinks Curt's a drug addict and Troy's brother thinks Troy's the biggest (literally) loser in Manhattan. Soon, Curt's recruited Troy as his new drummer—even though Troy can't play the drums. Together, Curt and Troy will change the world of punk, and Troy's own life, forever.
