L'arcidiacono di Notre-Dame, Claude Frollo, si innamora della celebredanzatrice zingara Esmeralda. Incarica perciò il grottesco campanaro dellacattedrale, il gobbo Quasimodo, di rapirla. Ma il capitano Phoebus deChateaupers la trae in salvo e conquista il suo amore. Frollo uccide Phoebusfacendo ricadere su Esmeralda la colpa del delitto. Quasimodo intanto,commosso da un atto di gentilezza di lei, diventa quasi un suo schiavo e laconduce a Notre-Dame per proteggerla. Dopo una serie di peripezie, Esmeraldaverrà catturata e fatta impiccare sotto gli occhi di Frollo, che osservaimpassibile l'esecuzione. Quasimodo, disperato, ucciderà Frollo e poi, con ilcadavere della donna tra le braccia, si lascerà morire a sua volta.
