Not just a novel but have some messages on genome patent and genetic engineering. It could have been more interesting if the story was developed forward on moral issues and interaction between man and transgenic animal.

"Next" should be the last novel of Michael Crichton that I have read.
I have been his fan for over 10 years and have read every one of his fiction and non-fiction works.
But starting from "Airframe", I think Crichton has lost his flair. He is good at picking up the hottest high-tech issues and developing them into roller-coaster-ride stories for the sole purpose of preaching his personal views. Along the way, he has lost his focus: the story is just not interesting.
He made the same mistake in "Next". To dramatise the horrors of genetic engineering, he packed at least 10 different developments of a story comprising 2 dozens characters in one novel. There were several genetic cures, transgenic animals (talking parrot, chimpanzee, orangutan), genetic hybrids, mutations etc, and all these stories developed simultaneously and were somewhat intertwined. You will easily get lost, lose track of what is going on, and then couldn't care less anymore. I think Crichton himself had also lost track of some of the characters as there were a few missing parts.
The novel is really too complicated. Crichton made all this fuss just to advocate against genes patenting. Readers may as well read his views in the author's note.
Really disappointing ...

It took me a long while to finish this book which didn't unfold as excitingly or overwhelmingly as Michael Crichton’s earlier novels. And it doesn’t seem as finished. It’s full of fragmented storylines and too many characters in flat personalities which you can't even neither recognize them from one another nor remember what they’ve done in previous chapters.
However, I still very much enjoyed Michael Crichton's preaching as usual. And it's fun and thrilling to read all those episodes about the possibilities of where the genetic engineering will eventually lead us to.
It would be quite lonely being in this unethical real world without the company of Mr. Crichton. And I’m starting to miss him now.

Usually a Crichton book is worth 5 stars to me. Not this one but still a good read.

A brillian tale on genetics and ethics. Fast-paced and horrific, it gives some interesting insights regarding gene-patenting, gene-business and gene-profit.
