  • Book Review: American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis Share

Patrick Bateman: a twenty-six year-old Wall Street yuppie, a psychopath, and perhaps the world's worst nightmare. That being said, he is also the anti-hero that I couldn't help but love. Bret Easton Ellis churned out a great novel in this one. Here i ... (read full critics)

What is so great about American Psycho anyway ?
Why do i keep reading it over and over ?

I got no answer but my own fascination with Patrick Bateman : Patrick is so much myself and so much a real person that i really blame Ellis for being so fucking talented .

The Dante's quotation opening the book is explanatory of the hellish empty lives of the NYC yuppies in the 80ies, where only exterior matters (attires, brands, even the business card shape!): where you are cool if can get reservation in a hip restaurant and your friends do not recognize you and confuse you with other people. In such an emptiness Bateman starts raping and killing any "body" he finds without a real rationale. Incapable of warm and human relationships and eager to be loved (as he confesses to his secretary Jean, the only human being of the story), his mind slips in a private hell where reality and dream (actually nightmare) cannot be distinguished.
A novel sarcastically blaming the Yuppism, but perfectly fitting to the current times

  • Unfortunately I had to abandon it. It was not my genre, a bit too cruel for me...
