Enter the dark, magical world of the House of Night, a world very much like our own, except here vampyres have always existed.

One minute, sixteen-year-old Zoey Redbird is a normal teenager dealing with everyday high school stress: her cute boyfriend Heath, the school’s star quarterback who suddenly seems more interested in partying than playing ball; her nosy frenemy Kayla, who’s way too concerned with how things are going with Heath; her uber-tough geometry test tomorrow. The next, she’s Marked as a fledgling vampyre, forcing her to leave her ordinary life behind and join the House of Night, a boarding school where she will train to become an adult vampyre. That is, if she makes it through the Change—and not all of those who are Marked do. It sucks to begin a new life, especially away from her friends, and on top of that, Zoey is no average fledgling. She has been chosen as special by the vampyre Goddess, Nyx. Zoey discovers she has amazing powers, but along with her powers come bloodlust and an unfortunate ability to Imprint with Heath, who just doesn’t know how to take “no” for an answer. To add to her stress, she is not the only fledgling at the House of Night with special powers: when she discovers that the leader of the Dark Daughters, the school's most elite group, is misusing her Goddess-given gifts, Zoey must look deep within herself for the courage to embrace her destiny—with a little help from her new vampyre friends.

I think that "finally" we have the perfect mix between Twilight and Harry Potter..what an amazing start with this first book of the 'House of Night' series.

    And if you're wondering...yes, I'm being sarcastic!

    Whimsically modernal

While I enjoyed the book and in the course of time the entire series to date, the language is far more colloquial than than that of Twilight and almost twangs with Americanism. A good read suitable to young adults and those young at heart.

    Great YA Book

If you enjoyed Twilight, this is a great first book in a series. It is not as good as Twilight but I couldn't put it down after the first 50 pages. I finished the rest in one sitting. Zoey is a great protagonist with special powers and she has a wonderful group of friends at a special school for vampires. Can't wait to read Betrayed which is the next book in the series.

  • Loved everything about it...

Wow this was really good! It had that Harry Potter element with being 'Marked' and sent away to a boarding school and learning about this totally new life and world you're now living in. The main difference is of course that the students aren't witches and wizards they are vampyres!

I loved the setting and the whole concept of the story but most of all I loved Zoey. She is this amazing young girl who takes all the changes happening to her in her stride. She is a refreshing change from some young adult books heroines as she is strong, independent and confident. Of course theres the obligatory love interest in Erik but Zoey doesn't fall head over heels in love, there's no stupidity on her part which I loved!

All in all I loved the first book in this series and I'm really looking forward to getting my hands on the next installment.

  • Very enjoyable. This book is a combination of twilight series and more traditional vampire books. Although it is more of a quick read, it still grabs you with suspense and it is hard to put down. Deffintly a book that i would read more then once.
