I knew this was a book written about the Spanish Civil War but did not know much more about it other than that. I had assumed it was written over the period of the whole war and covered many aspects of the conflict. Only after I'd read it did I realize this story only covers one short part of the war and lasts only 4 days. This is the story of an American, Robert Jordan, who has joined with the Republicans to fight the fascists in Spain and his group's efforts to blow up a bridge in support of their cause. The story was very well written and if I could say so is as good as "War and Peace" since it covers and the whole gamut of emotions from romanticism to disillusionment.

  • Female characters in this novel...

There aren't any. Female charictitures, yes. But characters...no.

  • I don't think much of Hemingway's writing, but this book went well in conjunction with The First Casualty, The Naked and the Dead, and Hiroshima. (I read them simultaneously.)
