A great book, Absolutely unlike anything else Jack London wrote, autobiographical or not. The Spencerean /Nietzschean philosophy the protaganist dons almost like a uniform doesn't amount to much but his titanic effort to succeed in spite of everything, just to realise it was not worthwhile, is truly unforgettable and utterly convincing. Martin's urge to become a writer at all costs along with the growing awareness of his own value harshly clashes with the vulgar, down-to-earth ideals of the people surrounding him, no matter what social stand they belong to. Martin's overflowing vitality towers all over the book even when he decides, suddenly and irrevocably, to put and end to it, and it will linger in any reader's mind long afterwards. One can easily forgive London's flaws for all this.
A great read by all means.
