Baricco's books have never disappointed me. I always fall in love with them. It has been the same with Emmaus. After the first page I was already into it. His writing style is not as fancy and elaborate as usual. However, it is original and intriguing. At first, the style looks normal, after few pages one can start appreciating the words he chooses, the construction of the sentences, the usage of punctuation. Great skills.

The images and photographs of that piece of society that Baricco provides the reader are simply perfect. Perfect in their simplicity and effectiveness. Razor-sharp descriptions of that world. Only a person with a huge sensitivity can conceive them.

The story is top. It is tragic as much as it is simple and humble. Humble people, living in an underrated modest unassuming environment (who inhabits it is the first underrating it). Tragedy is waiting though.
The last ten or so lines are as surprisingly as one can imagine, not to say disappointing, somehow

good to be recycled if you are invited to a boring party. at least it is short and can be finished quickly (so you are not forced to abandone it)
