  • Bookreporter.com - THIS CHARMING MAN by Marian Keyes

    • Read an Excerpt Marian Keyes is one of those novelists who is never content to simply replicate her success. Back when she was at the forefront of the "chick-lit" movement, Keyes mastered that genre's formula of "single girl in the city" while stil ... (read full critics)

A book about an abusive politician and the women who he hurt getting revenge. It has an interesting plot line, but the writing style when she wrote in one of the character's voices was choppy and incomplete. It was quite annoying. If not for that I would've given this book a three star rating.

Dublin. Lola is a nice, good stylist who reads on newspapers her boyfriend, the New Ireland politician, Paddy De Courcy, is about to marry another woman. Alicia is the not totally aware Paddy's wife to be. Grace is a beautiful journalist in love with Damien but, in a way, involved in Paddy's story ...and her twin sister's one of Paddy's exes. Marnie, Grace's twin sister, living in London, married, two daughters, Paddy's ex, is so fragile she can barely survive day by day. All the Paddy's women share a secret about him... Turn-pager.

For chick lit this was quite a thick book and I must admit I found it quite hard to get through until later on when the story all seemed to come together. It was written in sections in the voice of Lola, Grace, Marnie and one part dedicated to Alicia. Lola's story written in a different font and in diary/chat form which was okay once I got used to it. It took a while to get to the point that not only Lola but Marnie and Grace had had some involvement with Paddy and that he was not the charming character he appeared to be.
I felt that it could have been condensed. I found the scene setting rather drawn out. The characters were well rounded and mostly likeable apart from Paddy, Alicia and the rather weak, selfish and pitiable Marnie who got what was coming and not all too soon in my opinion. Some humour but not roll on the floor laughing variety.

This book was highly disappointing for me, seeing how I loved the other books by this author. The sad thing was that it had a lot of potential to be another great book by Marian Keyes and fell way short. The essential flaw was one awful, awful character that sounded like a child was talking. The sentences were incomplete and it read like it was thrown together in a short time. There was no depth to this very shallow character and it made me want to skip her completely. And you can honestly skip a lot of what she says and still get the gist of the book. I did. I couldn't take reading her part anymore. The other characters are much more interesting and don't sound like children, so would have given this a higher rating if "Lola" was not in the book.

  • Not what the back cover promised, at all (wonder who did that!!) but much better. I liked it, disturbing, funny, and painful, yet I loved it. When I reached the mid, I could not stop reading.
