  Con Franzen, dopo mesi di letture insoddisfacentissime, ho finalmente avuto fra le mani un gran bel romanzo.

  Con Franzen, dopo mesi di letture insoddisfacentissime, ho finalmente avuto fra le mani un gran bel romanzo.
  L'ambientazione è l'America borghese, i personaggi appartengono a una famiglia normale del Midwest con problemi, nevrosi, equilibri difficili e parole non dette, ma anche con la tranquilla quotidianità che tutti conosciamo bene.
  I genitori, Enid e Alfred Lambert, rappresentano una coppia d'età che deve fare i conti con la salute incerta di lui, affetto dal morbo di Parkinson (il cui pensiero, disturbato dalla malattia, viene descritto magistralmente in alcuni passaggi del romanzo), e la volontà illusoria di lei di riprodurre ancora una volta una condizione familiare idilliaca (esistita solo nella sue fantasie) che veda tutti riuniti in occasione del Natale. I tre figli, molto diversi tra loro, sono tre esempi di vite possibili: Gary, dirigente di banca, è l'uomo integrato, che ha costruito una solida piattaforma economica ma non un altrettanto valido rapporto di coppia; Chip, il secondogenito, ha perso il suo lavoro in università per un "comportamento sessuale scorretto", ma è riuscito a mascherare questo fallimento con un nuovo impegno di scrittore-giornalista che inorgoglisce la madre; Denise è un ottimo chef, realizzata professionalmente, ma nel privato ha rapporti bisessuali che per la famiglia Lambert sono di certo moralmente discutibili.
  Franzen ha scelto di fissare lo sguardo su ciascuno di questi personaggi in capitoli differenti. Ne emerge un affresco particolarmente preciso della personalità di ognuno, per poi approdare al capitolo finale Un ultimo Natale, dove il romanzo riprende tutte le singole storie, riunendole e mescolandole di nuovo, come carte da gioco.
  L'utopia della felicità si scioglie nella constatazione che la vita non si può "correggere", malgrado tutti gli sforzi.

  A new American novelist worth being compared to the gratest ever

  Finally a novelist who can take the place of the biggest Philp Roth. Roth is nowadays too much concerned about his own oldness and death to produce something at his top level. My waiting for an heir looks ended at last.
