Promo for Statistics 101, with interesting real-life examples. Those who claim to have no mathematical mind cannot find any excuses avoiding numbers. Still, nothing should be put to extremes. Higher mortality when surgeons with unclean hands may prompt us to pay attention to hand hygiene in OR. However, a baseball player who walks a lot doesn't necessarily make the best athlete. Super Crunchers is a fascinating look at how statistical methods can be applied to problems in business, medicine, education, and more. The author, Ian Ayres, is to be commended on his presentation of technical concepts in an easy-to-understand manner. For teachers, the book is a virtual treasure trove, with example after example of individuals and organizations harnessing statistical methods to make superior decisions. The only drawback is the tone: the first half of the book borders on sensationalism. If, like me, you find this off-putting, try to stay the course—the second half is more subdued.

  • A powerful way to look into our world today. Not only it provides insight into what and how to decide but the ideas behind them eliminates our long period of meddling with obtuse thinking and unable to make decisions.
