《梦蕉亭杂记》作者陈夔龙，字筱石，号庸庵，别署庸庵居士。贵州贵阳人。光绪十二年（1886年）进士。历任河南、江苏巡抚，四川L湖广、直隶总督。本书记述了作者一生的经历和耳闻目睹之事。其中叙述戊戌变法、袁世凯向荣禄告密、戊戌六君子被害，义和团运动，以及慈禧太后西逃后，他充当奕劻助手，参与议和、签订《辛丑条约》等事件都比较详细，对于研究近代史有一定的参考价值。
