About a quarter of the way through this book I realized I had read it before but enjoyed reading it again and refamiliarizing myself with the characters. This is the sad story of what too much money, alcohol and free time can lead to. Upon reading about what happens to Dick and Nicole Diver I almost seem happy not to be rich. Dick and Nicole are a semi-autobiographical copy of Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald and reading about Dick and Nicole you can picture the disintegration and breakdown of both Scott and Zelda and of their marriage.

A milestone in American literature. And a masterpiece. After 'The great Gatsby', Scott Fitzgerald leaves once again his clear mark in describing the decadent lifestyle of the American high society. Also, the book is probably based on the psychic therapy that the author's wife underwent before the writing started.

The wonderful title is taken by the poem 'Ode to a nightingale' by John Keats, which adds a touch of romanticism to the novel.

Regarded by many as Scott Fitzgerald's greatest novel I found it particularly intriguing and pleasing to read. However, I do wonder what the author was seeking to achieve, if anything. Is it just a good story? Was he attempting to say something to the reader? Perhaps it was an account of the restlessness that pervades the lives of so many people. Nevertheless, a good book!

  • Letto tanti anni fa in italiano, ce la farò mai a rileggerlo in lingua originale, con il mio inglese approssimativo? Mi ci vorrà tempo prima di mettere l'etichetta di "finito"

  • I so loved The Great Gatsby that I couldn't resist reading this one.
Unfortunately I was diasppointed not to find the same romantic tension, torn characters and American dream atmosphere.
Gatsby was THE Beat Generation, Dick Diver is just a character in a book.
